Creative Latitude

Cat's fancy is a section devoted entirely to interesting blogs and bites found all around the world. All will be directly related to design, whether it be the business of design, bad design, or design itself. Anything goes!

If you have fancies of your own, please send Cat your fancies and Cat'll present them in the next issue. Or not.

Recent fancies from around and about

Looking for Peter Kaufman
Peter Kaufman, author of The Great American Meatloaf Contest Cookbook, licensed creativity coach with Before & After Inc, also the owner and Head Writer of the now defunct (but fabulous) www.stickyideas.com.

I first ran across Peter Kaufman years ago after a chuckle of an article at ClickZ, Care and feeding of a creative department. This morning when I went in search of his article for this section, I was sucked into ClickZ for more, more, more of Peter! For ego issues in a creative department, The morale of the story. A discussion about verbage in creative briefs, The creative brief... usually it's neither. And They laughed when I started my own web site had me asking the question, just where did stickyideas.com go? I went looking for remnants of the site, and low and behold, the last Stickyideas home page on the Waybackmachine featured Creative Latitude's site designer Nigel Gordijk, with his 'How to write a winning proposal'. Sticky Ideas, Peter Kaufman, we miss you. (Hopefully Webmonkey will stick around to cruise awhile longer?)

Design for Freedom
Looking for a creative boost? Then add The Freedom Project to your list of sites to bookmark. I smiled quietly when I read "We are truly thankful to everyone who took part. There were only a few times when an artist was not able to deliver work, we had to work some magic to resolve these situations. We did make a few "WE REALLY NEED YOUR WORK IN SOON"... From release 12, my personal fav was designed by Halfproject.com. Fear not, Design for Freedom is not centered around 9/11.

Design by Fire
At Design by Fire, Andrei is not at a loss at what to say about the Street Journal coverage of Greg Storey’s A Better Tighty Whitey. And just who IS Andrei? In his own words, "one of the first official interface designers hired at Adobe Systems ... (Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe InDesign)." Following close behind is wife Donna, with Why garden? Donna (gulp) quit a lucrative, high-tech, secure design job to spend more time with hubby Andrei. More power to you, Donna! As an avid gardener myself, I can't suggest better calm for the soul.

Deliberatelyburied.com
One of the most serious issues facing designers today is globalization. The online mag Deliberately Buried presents an interesting read with Globalization for dummies. Then go on, gafwa into the rest of with How to survive in high tech.

How does this work?
Another site I haven't heard much from lately is Creative Commons, until just today when I bumped into a mention at Business2.com with Giving it away (for fun and profit).

Speak up!
At the beautifully designed Underconsideration.com "Everything is always under consideration. Everything as we know it is up for discussion, reinterpretation and examination". Says it all, doesn't it? And to get you started at the 'Speak up' forum (please join in): Branding Identity - Where do standards manuals go when they die?, Google, Googled, Googling, Googleth… Design Academics - Playground, from the eyes of a student, again and again Discussion - Designer wages and cost of living, and one of high interest to myself (yes, Jeff, I'm taking notes) Can you have a life?

Don't worry, this is only a placeholder
Since when are Islamic colours baby blue? Read Better nation building through design by Michael Bierut, it's a hottie from where I'm sitting. Then move on to Michael McDonough’s top ten things they never taught me in design school. In fact check out all of The Design Observer as it's an excellent read.

That'll be all from the Cat until next month, she's off to learn DWMX2004 while holing up with room service. As mentioned above, please send in any suggestions, questions, and queries you may have. It may take a week or two for me to get back to you though!
