GRAPHIC make-overs
by 'GRAPHIC make-overs' editor Alina Hagen

Let's face it. Professional graphic design doesn't always get the recognition and understanding that we as professional designers would like it to.

We've all had to combat the notion by a portion of the population that feels graphic design can be done by most anyone who can dabble in computer software ranging from Word to Photoshop to FrontPage. This includes a family relative, neighbor, personal assistant, or even one's self. Because much of this work is done on a hobbyist basis, little or no fees are attached to the work. This, unfortunately, contributes towards dragging down  an understanding of what is involved in our profession, the skills required, and worst of all, decent and respectable wages for the professional designer. Disastrous results can occur when design is left to the non-professional designer, as seen in the infamous Florida 2000 Presidential election.

As a result, there is a proliferation of unprofessional, amateurish, and "make-do" design in both the print and web environments. Many of us have been hired to save projects that simply didn't work from a production standpoint and/or to turn these ugly ducklings into swans. These were the projects that needed... a GRAPHIC make-overs.

This feature is our very own reality show... GRAPHIC make-overs. This is where you will find real-world design make-overs done by professional designers. We are not here to bash people, but to educate and show the importance and success of hiring a professional. It does make a difference. You will see for yourself.
