Nevada Professional Facility Managers Association Identity
by Dan McElhattan III, M3 Advertising Design

Background:

Alternative Management (a client of M3AD) had a client that needed a new identity. The Nevada Professional Facility Managers Association is a non-profit organization comprised of engineers and facility managers of major hotels and casinos in Las Vegas. The organization educates and creates networking opportunities for their members while exposing them to new operations procedures and products that may assist in their daily challenges. They have a fundraiser that grants needed funds to local charities with building future scholarship funds.

The Challenge:

The president of the organization Anthony Williams, would boast, “We are heading in a new direction this year in our membership, fundraising and procedures while applying new educational tools to our members disposal.” Once the president stated his purpose of the year, it was evident that a new identity and business material including a web site needed to express their goals and reflect the new direction. To establish an identity that would be connected to the directional change the President wanted while representing or defining what NPFMA was not an easy task. Production Facility Managers deal with everything from air conditioning, ventilation, waste disposal, electrical and structural management. They are like the television character Scotty from the original StarTrek® series. Scotty’s responsibility was to make the Enterprise run efficiently; we may not know how, but we don’t question his ability to perform under pressure in maintaining the ship's performance.

Solution:

Key components of a facility require moving parts and gears. With this in mind we combined this gear into a symbol that would represent the direction of the association. We created a compass-like moniker that would represent all aspects of the organization. The various arrows originating from a central hub represent the directions in the various areas the president wanted to grow for the association. Ironically (and not intentionally) the logo also represents the fan or distributor within air ventilation systems. The logo was reinforced with bold custom type to represent structure and boldness. The flairs on the type are intentionally positioned to reflect the movement of the organization.

Alina's Feedback:

Dan did an excellent job capturing both the nature of the NPFMA organziation and the dynamic energy of their new direction by the use of the radiating arrows that show both ventilation and direction. He has helped bring the organization's image to life with a humanized look as well as with vibrant colors.
