ICON3 - The Illustration Conference June, 2003
by Von Glitschka
What has over 500 heads, 1,000 legs and spews out an endless
stream of strange and wonderful images? That would be ICON3!
What is ICON3? It's The Illustration Conference 2003 being
held in Philadelphia June 27-29.
A conference designed specifically by illustrators for illustrators
this year's conference will have over 500 doodlers attending
to hear such key note speakers like Gary Baseman, Milton Glaser,
Steven Heller, Anita Kunz, Gary Taxali, Hal Mayworth, Mark
Murphy and more.
So you may still be asking yourself, "What do a bunch of illustrators
do at a conference?" Well that's a good question considering
I've never attended one. I wasn't planning on attending this
one either until my good friend and fellow illustrator Paul
Howalt begged me to go so he'd have someone to hang with.
Ok I lied, I am going so I can hangout and have a blast with
other illustrators who understand, appreciate and think it
makes complete sense to have floating eyeballs in my illustration.
Because this years conference is in Philly each attendee is
being asked to submit an original portrait illustration of
Ben Franklin which they'll have an exhibit of all submitted
artwork to view while there and the top three will be rewarded
with prizes. In addition to that, there are several other
creative events such as an all illustrator band, a masked
ball where each illustrator creates their own mask to wear,
and an animation mini-film festival featuring original work
from a variety of artists including my own flash short called
'Fun with Toast'. But the best thing will be hanging with
like-minded creatives. (Not to mention the planned remote
control tank battle me and my two roommates will have. Checkout

So, off I go to the city of brotherly love in search of illustrative
fellowship with other doodlers. I'll let you know how it went
when I get back, show you some pictures and share the art
I submitted for the Ben Franklin exhibit.
