Success Story:
Shambhala International

The Shambhala Buddhist community had no regular internal communications vehicle, and the entire worldwide organization was very fractured and disheartened. I was hired to design a new quarterly newspaper. It had to be elegant and simple, while bringing the community together and representing it to the outside world at the same time.

I had to steer between a very rigid idea of the community's image on one hand and a very flakey image of spiritual organizations on the other. In the end, I used the Asian Arts Journal and traditional iconography from both Tibet and Japan as inspiration, and created an 11"x16.5" tabloid with a vertical mast (the only one I know of) called The Dot.

Two years later the community has come together and is moving forward in a very cohesive way. Many credit The Dot with playing a large role in this, and I still get unsolicited compliments on a regular basis. One detail appreciate is the humorous byline, which I came up with: "Nothing happens and we report it."
