Success Story:
Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of Canada (Calgary Chapter):
The Calgary Chapter needed someone with my skills to help them make the Chapter issues and events more visible to both doctors and patients. Before I came on board as a volunteer, their newsletter was nothing more than pieces of clipart on some Xeroxed pages that were barely legible. There was no content or interesting research information whatsoever. Many professionals were not even aware of the issues pertaining to the Calgary Chapter and region. It was hard to look professional when a publication is not professional. These issues needed to be communicated in a concise and effective manner.

I redesigned the newsletter logo, masthead, and pages. I made a proposal to the Executive Committee prior to joining, that I create a content-oriented newsletter with separate pages for: a feature; Chapter events; education; research and volunteer participation. Content was extremely important, as well as making it effective visually so people would want to read it. The goal was to make patients more informed about their own illness and to have researchers communicate to doctors and patients of new discoveries and treatments. Through design and writing, creating communication and dialogue among these groups was a key goal.

The job was successful for these reasons:
a) It appears in the major hospitals in Calgary and is distributed to patients who are in the hospital.

b) It's placed strategically in specialists' and surgeons' offices so that information is readily available to the patients, especially those who are first diagnosed and seek information and support.

c) Patients join as volunteers or become members and ask questions of their doctors regarding the information in the newsletter.

d) It has created dialogue between patients and their doctors regarding new research and treatments.

e) Patients ask for it if an office runs out.
